Evening Gala Event: to wear pantyhose or not to wear?

Anna Kolashnikova in pantyhose 2

Russian famous model, Anna Kalashnikova, trying on a dress for a wedding party. Yes, she wears pantyhose!

I saw this in an interview with a Russian / French fashion historian, Alexander Vassiliev, about wearing pantyhose with an evening mid-length dress. Here is a translation of the dialogue, taking place in Estonia (Europe):

Interviewer: Now, a question about something idiotic. A colleague read online some “fashion advice” about not wearing pantyhose with a shorter evening dress because it would make the legs glossy and this is not desirable. This would mean that ladies would come to celebrations, regardless of the time of the year, with bare legs. We were shocked. Do you have any comments?

Vassiliev: The author of this “fashion advice” should learn that there are not only shiny pantyhose out there, but also semi-matt and matt. For sure, they are always a must if paired with closed toe shoes.

Let me tell you, recently I went for my dental cleaning and I was chatting to my 23 year old dental hygienist. She was telling me about a beautiful wedding she just recently attended. I asked her if she wore pantyhose. Her answer was naturally “no”, as that of most Canadian-born women her age, but she said that she would if she would have a pair. Never in her life she tried on pantyhose, not even once, and there is currently none in her wardrobe.

It’s hard to say whether she said that she would wear it if she would have it just to please me, since she knows that this is what I work with. But at least it’s clear where this “fashion advice” is coming from that gets authentic fashion experts to raise their eye brows.

Models in Stockings at Dolce Amore Fashion Show

This weekend I came to a fashion show and managed to see a little of it before I ventured backstage to help the girls with their outfits.  If I manage to snatch a few more photos from that show of models in stockings from other photographers, I’ll post.

Fashion shows are very stressful and usually there are assistants to help with the outfits.  If a model needs to quickly change from one outfit to another, she may not have a chance to attach the garter belt or to align the backseam.

This show was done by Dolce Amore Lingerie Boutique in Vancouver.

Pretty Garters – Guest Post Opportunity

I am looking for guest bloggers to write about garters for cross-promotion.

What a pretty accessory, but where did it come from?  At least traditionally, garters were meant to be worn in pairs with stockings to prevent them from falling down.  But isn’t it kind of bad for circulation?

Inna, the woman who did my “history of hosiery” page, said that first stay up stockings came out around 60’s.  Maybe that’s what made the garter obsolete.

There was also something online saying that there used to be tradition of a garter being brought back by the groom to show that he “did it” with the bride.  Some weddings still use it.  I find it kind of immodest, for sure would not want anything of this sort at my own wedding.

But do you notice that women wear these mostly without any stockings at all now?  I’ve been to Can Cun and they had some young bride there walking around in a mini dress, garter, and flip flops.  Can’t get funnier than this!  It was in the evening, so you can’t blame the heat.

I figured I’ll post this and see if anyone would like to do a guest post on this topic.

Wearing garters over pantyhose (or stockings)

They say that garters are still around because of the old wedding tradition when the groom had to prove that he “did it” with the bride.  Well, I’m glad they are!  I find them super sexy.

It’s a lovely little accessory that only seems to show up at weddings during completely immodest scenes of the groom climbing under the bride’s skirt in public.  In my opinion, this is entertainment for some semi-drunk boys at the wedding, but hardly a sensual moment between the couple considering that perhaps their parents are also watching.

In our private life, if given enough creative imagination, such accessories can add some fire to your intimacy.  Here are some ideas that come to my head.  Feel free to share your ideas, I’ll add them to the list.

Garters are not expensive, you can find some for about $5 in a novelty store and there is really no need to pay more.  Is there a practical application to a garter?  No, not anymore, but in the old days it was used to hold up stockings.   But that’s the beauty of it, it’s worn purely for attention.

1) Peek-a-boo:  If you wear a garter with a loose skirt, it could be a nice peek-a-boo surprise for your husband.  You may totally catch him off guard if you do it in the elevator, for example.

2) Strap for holding surprise tickets:  I can also totally see it as part of presentation for a surprise pair of tickets.  Imagine, you tell him that you have a surprise for him and tell him to search you like a police man in order to find it.

3) Strip-tease:  It could be part of the tease when doing a naughty dance.  It is one more fun item to work with.

Do you have any ideas about garters that you want to share?
