Sophia Loren and how she handled criticism about her looks

sophia loren in fishnet pantyhose

I came across a book on the internet called “Being a goddess for your man” and there was an interesting reference to Sophia Loren there to demonstrate how a true lady can handle herself in a classy and calm way even in the most provoking situation.

At a press-conference, a journalist started to publicly criticize Sophia’s outfit, but such behavior didn’t make her uncomfortable. She politely said to him that it is entertaining to see a movie critic pay so much attention to a piece of fabric rather than the film itself. Sophia Loren asked him to tell the audience if everything is alright with his intimate life because he is so focused on her pantyhose.

This heckler was silenced and Sophia Loren demonstrated once again the power of her femininity.

P.S. Thank you to Nikolaj from Germany for supplying me with a whole gallery of Sophia Loren photos. I am going to keep on releasing them on social media and for future articles.

Interview: Anne Atkinson, Classic / Mature Model

I would like to introduce Anne Atkinson, a UK-based mature model who has an excellent portfolio of fashion and lingerie photos.  She agreed to answer a few questions about her life and career.

Q: It’s very interesting to see a woman who works as a model beyond
the age of 25.  I’ve heard before that for commercial photoshoots all
different age groups were in demand just so that the companies could
appeal to various age groups.  Do you feel that being a mature model
you have less competition than all the 21-year-olds running from
casting to casting?

A: In my age group there are fewer models with what seems to be a greater variety of looks for different types of shoots. However, getting paid work is harder as there seem to be fewer opportunities, so I have been working on generating some ideas of my own to work on.

Q: Some people say that modeling is fun.  Do you agree?  I personally
see it as work that is physically and mentally demanding, at least
based on my own experience.

A: While modelling can be very physically and mentally demanding, it can also be good fun. It’s good to be able to develop a rapport with the photographer and exchange a few jokes. I prefer not to take myself TO seriously but I feel I have to give the job everything I’ve got.

It’s important to keep fit and eat healthily though, so modelling isn’t just about turning up for jobs but also about maintaining a healthy approach to life all the time. It’s important also to bring ideas of your own to a shoot. The photographers appreciate your input and generating creative ideas adds to the enjoyment of the job.

Q: Have you ever thought of starting your own modelling agency?

A: Starting a modelling agency is not something I have thought of. I would think it would be very hard to get started in what is quite an uncertain area of business.

Q: What are your thoughts about parents putting their kids in modeling
and beauty pageants at an early age?  If it would be up to you, would
you put a certain age minimum on that?

A: When my sons were younger, as they were both attractive children, it crossed my mind to try and get them into the child modelling world. I think parents need to think very carefully about what it could involve and make sure that the child’s happiness and welfare is always foremost.

I have sometimes been concerned that some parents are fulfilling a need of their own and maybe forget to think too deeply about the welfare of the child. I certainly think the child beauty pageants are wrong on many levels. They can give a child an unrealistic set of values and could even lead to problems of self esteem as they get older.

Having said all this, there are obviously children who love all the attention, the opportunities to dress up etc. With the proper safeguards, (including proper checks from outside agencies) I think it can be OK.

Q: Great to see that you enjoy lingerie.  Do you have any favourite
lingerie outfits that you would like to share with us?

A: I enjoy posing in lingerie but, being older, there are areas of my body that I prefer to keep covered. So my favourite types of lingerie are usually items such as bodies, teddies and corsets. One of my favourites is this one (displayed below) – the frill and the different materials accentuates my figure and makes me feel sexy.

Barbara Palvin: Huge Success, and Younger than Twenty!

Barbara Palvin Victorias Secret Lingerie Photoshoot13

Rising young star Barbara Palvin comes from one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Budapest, Hungary.  She was born on October 8, 1993.  Looking into her sky blue eyes, one sees purity and sincerity. Barbara conveys a fresh and youthful look to the world.

From early in her childhood, Barbara dreamed of having a beautiful life as a supermodel.  She started her career in the modeling business at the age of 13, when she was scouted by monsieur Balazh from Icon Model Management, still her manager today.

jrix1z63326xjxi3

It all began when one lucky day she was walking with her mother around Budapest, and upon returning home found an invitation from Balazh to do test shootings.  In the invitation he wrote, "Barbara, you will be a great model – I promise you!"  She felt like she was in a fairy tale, that her dream was coming true, but didn’t suspect that it would happen so soon and easily.

Barbara-Palvin-8Barbara was the first 17 year old model to walk for Prada. After her modeling success with Prada Collection, she continued to get notice from the industry and appeared on catwalks for Miu Miu, Giles, Nina Ricci, and Louis Vuitton. In 2010 Hungarian Glamour magazine presented a photo shoot with the now famous Barbara Palvin, and in 2011 the then only 18-year-old model posed for the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar US, with photography by by Benjamin Alexander Huseby. Stylists gave Barbara the look of a true lady dressed in Armani, Moschino and Givenchy.

In 2011 Barbara  presented the Calzedonia brand, and became an Angel for Victoria’s Secret. Then, in 2012 she signed on with L’Oreal Paris.

Barbara Palvin in beautiful lingerie with black stockings and garter beltStylist Miranda Almond once said that Barbara combines the beauty of Natalia Vodianova and young Brook Shields. Palvin’s facial features are surprisingly adaptable for any look or transformation. Sometimes simply changing the shape of her bangs reveals an absolutely different person. Despite her unique facial features and slightly upturned nose, Barbara sometimes is hard to recognize in a photo.

Barbara is a truly interesting person who also behaves very professionally during her photo shoots.  Could it be her beautiful bone structure and good figure, in combination with her positive attitude that creates so much hype around her? With her beautiful complexion and hair, she was surely destined to become one of the best-known young models.
u6p6fdl4l19of6luBarbara always looks natural, no matter the amount of make-up she wears, or the high fashion nature of her poses. She always comes through appearing as a beautiful girl who achieved much and isn’t going to stop.

It may seem that to become a model one would need only to have a pretty face and harmonious figure – but this is not so. The hard work of modeling can involve standing in one pose for hours, carefully and accurately following instructions, taking rigorous good care of the body, and no sweets!!!  Six day work weeks are common. A model may have to endure ten long hours at a photo shoot until being told "we are done".

Barbara-Palvin

When at the beginning of her career, a model has little to say and much to learn. Her lack of experience puts her in the position of needing to demonstrate that she can work hard and learn quickly.  By the age of 19 Barbara proved herself in all of these areas and more. Barbara has an excellent portfolio which portrays her as graceful, beautiful, fashionable and packed with energy.

Some of Barbara’s favorite things: model Natalia Vodianova, designer Karl Lagerfeld, and she especially loves the song by Adele “Someone like you”.

Barbara Palvin 11

Barbara combines her work as model with university study. Though it sounds quite challenging, she can’t imagine her life without work which “allows me to travel all over the world, meet interesting people, and learn a lot of things about real life”.

When asked to describe herself in three words, she said "useful, crazy, and honest."  The thing she loves most in her work is meeting lovely people.

Recently Barbara was accused of causing a rupture of the relations of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez!  This was due to the 18-year-old Justin and 19-year-old Barbara being noticed together on Broadway at a showing of “The Lion King”.  A bit later, the model published photos with Bieber on her  page in Twitter. As a result, the social network was flooded with angry comments about Barbara, claiming her to be responsible for the rupture of relations between Bieber and Gomez.  In her defense, the model wrote on her Twitter page twice that there is no relationship between them.

Barbara Palvin Victorias Secret Lingerie Photoshoot7Barbara Palvin’s modeling biography is short – as of this writing, she isn’t even twenty years old! Many say she has the potential to become a supermodel, and all of us here at Fantasy Stockings agree. Barbara is considered to be a person who conveys confidence both in public and in front of the camera. "Working with her is a pleasure" says one of her associates, "…the girl is very charming, cheerful and interesting …"

Barbara Palvin ranks in the 23rd place in “The money girls” rating according to the models.com review. With each passing day Barbara is becoming more popular in the world of fashion and glamour.

What am I going to do with all these pretty things in my drawer?

It seems to me that I inherit pantyhose almost at the same rate as I purchase it.  On my quest for friendship I somehow only click with ambitious women, but they often decide to leave Vancouver for better career options.

Whatever things they can’t take, including their stash of hosiery, ends up being given to me.  I already feel like I have more than enough to keep up my hosiery supply for the next 2 years.

Things like bathroom scales and other gadgets in good condition can be easily sold at easy auction websites like DealDash, so I don’t mind to do it for them and just send them the money afterwards.

If it’s clothing that doesn’t fit me, it’s not a problem – I give it away to a friend who runs a second hand store.  As they say, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

But I can’t possibly think of just giving hosiery away.  Even though I already have too much, I can never refuse to have some more.  But let’s look at the bright side – it serves as a reminder about my friends aboard.  Through half way of me putting on that gifted hose, I recall that it’s been a while since I e-mailed the former owner.

Bianca Dragusanu, Romanian Playboy Model with a 95-65-95 body

by Camelia, our Romanian Connection

Bianca Dragusanu distinguished herself since high school, but not through exemplary behavior and good grades, but due to conflicts with teachers and classmates. Since childhood she wanted to become an independent businesswoman, but her beauty lead her to choose a modeling career.

At the age of 16 she appeared on the show “Because of Love” to get her love back. Her first notable appearance in sexy poses was at age 21 when she posed as the girl from page 5 in a Romanian newspaper, called “Libertatea”. At that time she was fuller and had curly brown hair.

During the fall season in 2009 she was co-opted to replace the assistant of the host of the TV show “A sinner show”, making her the most desirable sexy assistant on television.

Until two years ago nobody had heard of Bianca Dragusanu and no one knew who she was. She had discovered her charms of which she made full use as a model, and in private people were saying she was working as an escort.

Bianca became very well known after being involved in a long-term relationship with the famous Romanian designer Catalin Botezatu, of which she is now separated. She later got together with a Romanian football player, “the prince” Adrian Cristea.

Bianca Dragusanu quickly became popular in the modeling world and walked the catwalk for famous designers like: Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani. She was also requested for fashion shows in Romania, being considered the “ideal woman” – tall, thin and shaped.

Bianca had breast augmentation surgery at the age of 20 years, achieving dream measurements of 95-65-95 at a height of 180 cm and she is currently one of the highest rated models in Romania.

In 2009 Bianca Dragusanu accepted the offer to pose in the December issue of Playboy magazine, in exchange for $ 10,000.

Currently besides modeling and being the assistant of a TV host, Dan Capatos, she deals with real estate, wanting to succeed in this field. She says, like any model, it’s just a hobby job, an opportunity to meet new people.

Although dealing with real estate and holding the position of assistant, she did not give up yet on the catwalks, they are a reliable source of income and she is also the image of several fashion houses.

Karolina Kurkova – Launched Into Super Model Stardom Through the Kindness of a Friend

By David, United States

At the young age of twenty seven, Czech model Karolina Kurkova has enjoyed an impressive career, and was even one of the top earning models in the world, bringing in $5 million in 2007 when she was only twenty three.

Born in the town of Decin, Czechoslovakia, Karolina’s early childhood was not so easy. She was tall and shy, and had a low self image; school mates teased her about her unusual height for a girl. Surely she never would have guessed that the face she saw in the mirror every morning had fashion model potential – let alone potential that would soon make her one of the world’s top super models!  She never even gave it a second thought.

Fortunately, perhaps miraculously for we admirers from  around the world, one of her girlfriends had a different take on this future model and her untapped ability. And so this insightful friend took it upon herself to quietly put a set of pictures of Karolina Kurkova in a plain envelope and mail it to an agency in Milan.

The posting of this simple envelope by a young girl of only fifteen set off a chain of events that would propel Karolina into a fast paced and breathtaking rise to international stardom. That envelope led from getting some runway and print media assignments, to catching the eye of Milan fashion designer Miucia Prada.

By signing with Prada, Karolina was well underway on her rise to the top. Her amazing good looks, her attitude of playfulness and, at the same time self-assured confidence combined with her intense hard work ethic and self discipline (she was cited for working twenty three weeks straight without a break) to make her a sure success for international fame, as well as pride for herself and for her country of Czechoslovakia.

According to Mario Testino, an industry expert, “The proportions of her body and face, as well as her energy level, make her a model who could fit almost into any moment.” A little known fact about Karolina is that an early operation left her with a smooth indentation of skin instead of a navel… and her photographs are often altered to show a navel.

She moved to New York City in 2001 and soon made the cover of Vogue Magazine at age seventeen.  Karolina’s image has carried the message of many world class brands, including Yves Saint Laurant, Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, Valentino, and Louis Vuitton. She has appeared on over twenty five Vogue magazine covers internationally, and has been very active with Victoria’s secret as calendar model, and was part of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Webcast in 2000.

Blond model in black opaque pantyhoseAt the age of twenty three, around 2007, Karolina began gaining weight. This was caused, she said,  due to having contracted hypothyroidism. In 2009 she had her first child, a son, with husband Archie Drury, and she currently lives in New York City’s TriBeCa district. Since then, she has combined modeling, television, and movie appearances with charity work in world charity organizations mostly focused on children. She has received numerous awards for these selfless efforts.

Karolina Kurkova has carried out a truly amazing professional career, and is still only young at the age of twenty seven. You can get in touch with Karolina, and keep track of her personal and professional activities by liking her page on Facebook. There, she also makes frequent and fascinating posts about diet and health, fashion advice, and insightful philosophy. Here is one of her recent posts:

“Be persistent and work hard… Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.” … sounds like advice from a woman who is speaking from her own experience!  Good job Karolina!

Coco Chanel and Suntan Stockings

Before Coco Gabrielle Chanel, suntan was something associated with peasants and women tried to avoid it at all costs.

But thanks to her, she put an end to that trend and even came out with her own line of tan stockings by Chanel.  Even up to this day, Chanel brand still offers hosiery.

Interesting Point:

Did you know that before she became a fashion legend, Coco Chanel used to work as a clerk in a small hosiery shop? Legends do start small! From humble beginnings to grandeur!

Career: Clerk, Au Sans Pareil hosiery shop, Moulins, 1902-04

This Chanel design in the photo has been copied and re-created by so many different brands. But nothing looks the same as Chanel.

“Blue Stocking” – isn’t it time for a new definition?

I am posing in a styled outfit and blue stockings with the Science World Dome in the background.

Historical Meaning of “Blue Stocking”

In some languages this is quite a common phrase, it usually refers to a completely unattractive woman who only cares about her studies or work and nothing else.

Let’s look back in history to see where this figure of speech came from.  It seems that at least all around Europe this is usually directed at a highly intellectual woman to ridicule her a little bit for her nerdy outfit.  The meaning of this expression is quite vague, depending on the country or era.  This term in German is known as Blaustrumpf, in Dutch as blauwkous and in French as bas-bleu.

Falbala stockings are beautifully decorated with gold and silver studs and ribbons.

Even though this phrase is used to describe a woman, it originated in Europe as a nickname for Benjamin Stillingfleet in the 17th century who was a botanist, translator, and an author from England.  He was a very intellectual man and without him there was no more interesting discussions.  However, he paid no attention to fashion, wearing blue stockings instead of silk black, as it was common back then.  Other sources may say that silk was too expensive, so he wore blue worsted stockings instead.

The "lack of fashion" idea was later emphasized by a French painter Honore Victorin Daumier in the mid of 19th century who painted humorous series called Les Bas Bleus to mock the blue stockings society. These paintings had a satiric nature to them, showing women in a repelling and androgynous way, completely immersed in philosophical discussions and oblivious to the mess and dirt around them.

Meaning of "Blue Stocking" in different countries

Germany:  This was a way to tease those who tell on others (snitch or tattle teller), thus making a reference to street policemen who wore blue stockings.

Italy:  Probably this is the only country with a positive meaning for this expression.  InVenice in XV century blue stockings were only reserved for scientists and academics.  It was an attribute of an educated person.

France:  For French this expression would be a synonym of being a slob.  It implied that one would be so immersed in intellectual development that would not pay any attention to fashion and household chores.

Eastern Block:  In former USSR this is a way to call a woman without any charm who only focuses on her work or academics.  But this is probably all coming from the French.

Could this be the reason why navy blue hosiery is so rare these days?  Could it have the negative connotation dating to the middle ages in Europe?  It is time for an upgrade.

Blue Stockings Lounge is a place to visit for unforgettable cabaret shows in South Wales.

Have you seen women wearing these at all lately?  This is 2012 and when I look at educated women, they are rarely in stockings to begin with!  There is even rarely a dress code in science-oriented companies and most women come in blue jeans, not in blue stockings.  Why can’t a woman in blue stockings be a smart and trendy lady who knows how to present herself well?

Let me share some responses here that I got from people about blue stockings.

Falbala:  There is also a UK online store called Falbala that offers hand made decorated stockings and a lot of them are blue, Karen, the owner admits that blue and gold is her favourite combination.  Their products are actually very unique and trendy, thus re-defining blue stockings as a modern fashion accessory.  I asked her how to wear blue stockings in a stylish way and this was her reply " I wear them with black denim shorts, patent black heels and a royal blue top with a gold necklace".

Bluestocking Lounge:  This is in fact quite a trendy burlesque lounge in South Wales and for sure they are not lacking any style.  To answer my questions about why they chose this name, this is what they had to say on Twitter about this:

"This exactly what we are about – going against the norm and doing the unexpected.  Our guests feel like they’re a secret society!  A name is just a name until you fill it with meaning by however you use it.  I took it (the name) from Bluestocking Society, the 1400s society founded in Venice by erudite men and women."

Tricity Vogue photographed by Gavin Mecaniques

Tricity Vogue :  Another interesting personality is a jazz and cabaret singer, Tricity.  She is also the co-founder of the Blue Stockings Society cabaret and burlesque sorority in London, UK.

I asked about what this expression means to her and this was her reply on Twitter: "To me blue stockings mean a combination of clever and sexy, with a healthy dose of rebellion thrown in."  What a perfect way to put it!  She wrote the best detailed history article of what blue stocking really means and where it came from.  You can read it here.
